tw: rape, trafficking
this is not my photo, this is a photo of Somaly Mam, an ex-trafficer forced into sexual slavery as a child. after her escape from the tortues of various brothels in Cambodia, she put together the foundation AFESIP Cambodia to help free other trafficking victims in cambodia. later on, her, Nicholas Lumpp and Jared Greenberg founded The Somaly Mam Foundation, a cambodian based foundation with a mission focused on rescue, recovery and reintegration. Somaly and her foundation have won several awards, and have gained global attention while pairing with The Body Shop.
this doesn’t come without a price, after several break ins and even her own daughter being kidnapped by angry brothel owners, SMF is thriving but always needing help. you can donate to the foundation on the Somaly Mam website or you can check out their Empowerment Store for jewelry, scarves and Somaly’s very own autobiography, The Road of Lost Innocence (an amazing read).
i think it’s important to donate in anyway you can, human trafficking is a very serious issue with dire consequences if it goes unhelped.
